Kal-El of Krypton

I wrote about a Superman discussion that was brought up in a piece over at Racialicious:

So it was weird for me to see someone (Jeff Parker) saying “less Krypton! less Jor-El!” — to which my response was a resounding “yes!” — before then going into “being an alien isn’t crucial to his character! something something Americana and shit!” Now, this is Superman: we can all have different takes on such an iconic character and they can almost all be valid… but no, this take is demonstrably wrong.

I said more than that, some stuff about the immigrant narrative, and why despite the importance of that I do like certain aspects of Krypton being downplayed.

It does kinda bug me out that a real life professional comic book creator would get something so simple so wrong, though.

Superman throws a man into space, because cigarettes.

Throughout this story in BLONDE PHANTOM #17, the Sub-Mariner is sporting a shirt with a giant “S.” Did this last for one issue only?

Is this from an Amalgam book?
(A Namor/Superman character would make a twisted kind of sense.)

Got this yesterday, but I have to let April read it first so she can tell me if it’s safe for me to read. #comics #Superman #ManofSteel

Oh good, I was worried that Superman would not be as hot and modern as I was hoping. Those are the two words I want to hear when discussing Superman, so…
PS: It is pretty weird to see previews of the hot new movies of the summer featuring SUPERMAN, IRON MAN and THE GREAT GATSBY.

(Emphasis mine.)

The next day, Clark walks to work, and surreptitiously helps people on the way –- he drags a bus about to hit a guy to a stop, he moves a tired delivery boy’s papers, and –- I can barely believe I’m about to type this –- he cooks the raw meat a homeless woman is eating from the garbage with his heat vision. That’s right. Clark sees a woman eating garbage out of a garbage can, and his solution is to heat up her goddamn food.

- Rob Bricken on the terrible Superman movie we never got.

Villains I would rather have seen in a new Superman movie than General Zod again

A thousand times yes.

75 years of history and all any movie makers can do is think fondly on on 1978-1980.

ourvaluedcustomers:

I took this picture a few years ago and just came across it today. The car’s owner came into the comic store looking for Superman stuff and told us that he “LOVES Superman” and pointed across the street to his car. The hood had a HUGE decal of Brandon Routh from Superman Returns. He bought a few Superman t-shirts and he hopped into his car and took off. We never saw him or the car again.

Ah, the Superman origin of the 1950s. Silly, overblown, also amazing.

I wrote a bit about it, why it stuck with me over the years, and why a Superman with no Kryptonian connections, who doesn’t even know what he lost, is generally a better version of the character. Also funny 1950s costumes!
